Artist Statement

Through the process of reviewing my work for a new website my perspective and site plan changed. So this website has become different than I originally planned, more personal than I expected, and the lead-in for a fresh start.

Almost five years ago, I fell from a scaffold while painting a mural, experiencing a traumatic injury. I underestimated the limitations and compounding issues I was to encounter. My mobility and fine motor skills began to fail, pain levels increased and, worst of all, I was unable to paint. After years of doctor visits, surgeries, and procedures I began to face the possibility of living without creating art. I would have gotten rid of my art supplies, except that I wasn’t up to the task, and I’m happy for that now. After doing art in one medium or another all my life, giving up on it was hard to contemplate. So when I began to see small improvements, I waited and hoped. I’m not back to what I was, but I’m now a tolerable new normal. Best of all, I can paint, hence the new website.

The work I’ve selected for the site is a blend of new work, and a retrospective of old. This is where I’ve been, and I’m working on where I’m going with it. Like many artists, I have more ideas than I have time, but I plan to explore and not watch the clock.. I’m just happy to be back and appreciate you reading this and visiting my new site. I’d love to hear your thoughts, answer any questions, and add you to my mailing list.

Best Regards,

“I came to know Cathy Fields’ work when I put together a show called “whimsy”. Cathy entered a piece called “An Unlikely Parade”. I loved it and the more of her art I saw, the more it was obvious that a big part of her work is the thought behind it”. Peter MacDonald of The Brick House Gallery.
